Former Sri Lanka skipper, Mahela Jayawardene has been selected by Sri Lanka Cricket to accompany the senior men’s team to Zimbabwe.
This is because the ICC World Cup Qualifiers are going to be held in the African nations with ten teams competing for the final two spots of the ICC ODI World Cup.
Meanwhile, the SLC has not yet announced the official squad for the tournament.
But, the chances are that the recent ODI setup against Afghanistan is going to be picked for this event.
Furthermore, Jayawardene is currently a consultant coach for the national cricket team.
Overall, the management has decided to send a contingent consisting of 25 players and limited support staff for the event.
Currently, Jayawardene is handling the coaching and player development program which is strengthening the domestic and international men’s squads.
He has also taken up the responsibility of U19 and Sri Lanka A teams as part of his duties.
On the other hand, chief selector, Pramodya Wickramsinghe is also going to travel with the team to Zimbabwe.
Sri Lanka team’s nutritionist and psychologist fail to make the cut for Zimbabwe
Additionally, Prof Arjuna de Silva has stated that the team’s nutritionist and psychologist will not travel for the event.
The two specialists are going to go to India only if the national team qualifies through this event.
Both the nutritionist (Dr Hashan Amasrthunga) and psychologist (Dr Fedinan Perera) worked successfully with the team. We have to send a limited support staff for the Zimbabwe trip. But, yes, if our team qualifies for the World Cup, we will certainly try to send them.
Meanwhile, the Qualifiers are going to go underway on the 18th of June and it will be an interesting one.
Sri Lanka is in Group B with Ireland, Oman, Scotland, and the UAE for this event.
Furthermore, the Lankan Lions will start their campaign against the UAE on the 19th of June.
