Here we have with us the Man United player ratings as they suffer a 0-1 defeat at home against Atletico Madrid. The Red Devils were knocked out of the Champions League after they failed to score in the second leg of the round of 16. United have gone 5 years without a trophy which is their worst trophy draught in 40 years.

Manchester United started the game really well with Atletico having no answers whatsoever. Every player had stepped up their game and were pushing as hard as they could. The players also had massive support from their fans who had their voices at maximum level in the opening 45 minutes. Elanga came close to opening the score but Oblak was lucky to save the effort somehow with his head.

Atletico Madrid had a moment to themselves when they scored an offside goal and the flag took some time to go up. United did play some of the best football in the opening half an hour but could not convert their chances. However, all the work was gone to dust when Atletico Madrid scored with a header from Renan Lodi that came from an excellent Griezmann cross.

Manchester United in the second half had to do a lot of things considering they were one goal down. They were not able to create big chances and suffered the consequences. One header from Varane did seem like that was it but Oblak was up there with his reflexes. Rangnick tried to put all the attacking options on the pitch but none of them could change the scoreline.

Man United player ratings vs Atletico Madrid

David de Gea – 6/10

Pulled off a fine save from Rodrigo de Paul, however, he later conceded the goal at the near post. Was largely untroubled after that.

Diogo Dalot – 4/10

Did well to contribute to the attack but failed to mark Lodi when conceding the goal. He did not look as confident later on as he was at the start of the game.

Raphael Varane – 7/10

Did well to get into positions and make tackles despite Maguire’s errors. Could have gotten himself a goal if it was not for Oblak’s save.

Harry Maguire – 4/10

Was caught out of position several times which resulted in United conceding the goal. Also lacks the pace to get back into position quickly.

Alex Telles – 4/10

Couldn’t quite get with Jadon Sancho on the left-hand side and also failed to check his shoulder a couple of times.

Scott McTominay – 4/10

Was very good at winning the ball back and physical gameplay but had to improve his passing and create some chances or could have taken a few shots.

Fred – 6/10

He showed that he is a Brazilian with brilliant skills and ball-winning in the first half but was a lot quieter in the second half.

Bruno Fernandes – 5/10

Was not as sharp as he usually is and was easily getting frustrated with the referee. Many may not like him getting substituted but Bruno was not at his best on the night.

Anthony Elanga – 5/10

He should have opened the scoring with the point-blank shot and also went down easily which giveaway the ball to Atletico who scored on the other end.

Jadon Sancho – 4/10

A poor performance from Sancho after quite a few games as he was against a tough right-back, Marco Llorente.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 5/10

Ronaldo showed his intent when he dropped in the midfield a few times to get touches but couldn’t get past the tough Atletico defense.

Substitutes

Paul Pogba – 5/10

Had very little effect on the game as he barely changed anything.

Marcus Rashford – 4/10

Continued his poor form here too with another poor display.

Nemanja Matic – 5/10

Added an option in the midfield and tried to change a few things but was not able to do so.

Edinson Cavani – 4/10

The Uruguayan got no service at all and was not able to get involved in the gameplay.

Juan Mata – 5/10

He is not the magician that he once was and perhaps couldn’t do anything in the dying minutes of the game.
