Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag changes his thought on Harry Maguire. Erik Ten Hag deployed Maguire at his preferred left-side central defence role. Moreover, it looks to have worked as the Englishman had an impressive display against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup. The United boss ruled out Maguire playing in that position less than six months ago.
The 30-year old showed a great character in his partnership with Varane at the heart of the backline on Tuesday. In Maguire’s role, Erik previously deployed players like Martinez, Lindelof and even Luke Shaw in previous few months. They even delivered good results as well. This forced Erik to rule Maguire out of his first-choice. With Varane nailing at the right-side, it became difficult for Maguire to get a starting role even. The France International even captained the team against Crystal Palace on Tuesday night. Sofyan Amrabat made his first start for the Red Devils starting in left-back position.
Speaking after Nottingham Forest victory back in April, Erik Ten Hag rejected the suggestion of Maguire playing in his preferred left centre-back role. The United boss said,
“The angles are not good for Harry if he is playing on the left side, it’s difficult for him also defending in wide areas on his left foot but I think he is more capable on the right. Victor is very good, he can use both feet and I think he also did a brilliant job in the rest of defence and the defensive transitions. That’s why we prefer to do it with them in this way.”
Furthermore, Harry Maguire got much needed minutes in the match against Palace. He displayed a great command and showed he has a big role to play for Ten Hag’s team this season.
