Manchester United have reportedly had a contract extension turned down by Jesse Lingard. The forward has rejected the opportunity to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Lingard was linked with a move to West Ham United. He spent the latter half of last season at the Hammers, having an immediate impact. However, the Englishman opted to stay United but has rejected a contract extension.

The arrivals of firstly Jadon Sancho and now Cristiano Ronaldo raises concerns regarding his play-time this season.

Manchester United hope to retain Jesse Lingard

Manchester United man Jesse Lingard was scintillating for West Ham last season. He found the back of the after net 9 times and set up 5 more in 16 appearances during an impressive loan spell.

The forward expressed his desire to stay with the Red Devils and fight for a spot in the first team.

Lingard registered just four minutes of Premier League action so far this term. This comes when he made an appearance off the bench against Southampton last month.

In spectacular form so far, he scored twice and assisted a third in England’s 4-0 thumping of Andorra. Lingard will be fully aware that going forward his international minutes will depend on how regularly he features for his club as well.

The 28-year-old has now entered the final year of his deal with Man United. Come January, he will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs elsewhere unless negotiations for an extension succeed.

However, it will become clearer how much of a part he is likely to play in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans. Manchester United will kick-off their Champions League and Carabao Cup campaigns, in addition to playing four league matches.
