Manchester United gives up their pursuit of Darwin Nunez as Liverpool’s interest intensifies

Manchester United are said to have withdrawn their interest from Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez. On the other hand, it seems that Liverpool are dreadfully close to signing him from Benfica.

The 22-year-old is one of the most sought-after strikers this summer. He was in the form of his life in the 2021-22 season where he scored 34 goals in 41 games across all competitions. Six of them were scored in the Champions League. The Benfica man has been kept on the radar of top clubs of Europe for some time now. In recent weeks it seemed that United led the race to get his signature.

However, Liverpool suddenly entered the race to sign the striker. Interestingly, now, the Red Devils are said to do not want to go into a bidding race with their arch-rivals, Liverpool. This was reported by Goal journalist James Robson.

Liverpool are said to have already agreed to a club-record fee of £86million. Moreover, the Reds want to sign him ‘as soon as possible’. This desperation is understood as Sadio Mane is rumored to be leaving and they want to complete the transfer before the Senegalese leave Anfield.

Which area is Manchester United looking to strengthen this summer?

United are prioritizing the signing of Frenkie De Jong for which they have made the first bid. However, that bid is said to have been rejected by Barcelona. The Red Devils are leading with a lot of departures this summer, especially in the midfield area.

Therefore, Erik Ten Hag’s first priority would be preparing his midfield. Moreover, United’s midfield have been under the scanner for a long time now.

Names like Wolves’ Ruben Neves, Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz, and PSV Eindhoven’s Ibrahim Sangara are all been linked to United in recent weeks. It remains to be seen which of them would don a United shirt and play in the coming summer.
