According to Sport, Barcelona wants £17 million for Ousmane Dembele and has been offered to Manchester United. Dembele has been the subject of criticism at Barcelona in recent weeks. The Frenchman’s agent is demanding €40 million as he did receive any commission when the Catalan club signed Dembele.
Enric Fontcuberta covered a story on this and he suggests that there may already be pre-contact between the French player and the English club. Manchester United have been linked with Dembele for quite some time now and the unrest at Barcelona may work in United’s favor.
The Frenchman is seeing the last six months of his contract at Barcelona. The Catalan club may lose him for free if they do not sell him this month. Moreover, he won’t be playing much in Spain from now on. This will result in Barcelona losing Dembele’s services but paying his wages till the summer.
Manchester United already have enough firepower in their squad which allows everyone to doubt United’s decision of signing Dembele. United have struggled so far to get results this season. However, their defense has somewhat improved under Rangnick. Nevertheless, they are struggling to find the back of the net under the German coach.
Why Manchester United must not sign Ousmane Dembele this January?
Manchester United signed Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer of 2021. However, Sancho has not continued his Dortmund form and other forwards like Rashford and Martial are experiencing the same. They also admire the veteran striker Edinson Cavani who has stepped up whenever required for United. Dembele signing will only waste money and fill up positions.
United will have to offer him high wages and also manage his injuries which have been sustained quite often for a few years now. He will play very few games for what United have paid resulting in another failed signing. What United needs now is a midfielder that fits Rangnick’s requirements.
A club like Newcastle might look for a chance to sign Dembele. The Frenchman has been inconsistent since his time at Barcelona and very few big clubs are likely to offer him a contract. Moreover, Newcastle can also handle the financial part of the game due to their recent Arab takeover.
United have to strengthen the areas where they don’t have quality players in that area. Although United are struggling with goals, they have the players but they are underperforming at the moment. Therefore, there is no need of signing a forward except a center forward soon. Cavani and Ronaldo will be reaching their limit soon and United will have to replace them well to sustain.
