Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the third round following a 1-0 defeat to West Ham United last night.

Manuel Lanzini’s ninth-minute strike gave them their first win at Old Trafford since 2007, sending them into the next round of the competition.

United went into this match fresh off a thrilling 2-1 Premier League win at the London Stadium when the sides met on Sunday. However, with most of their major stars rested, the Red Devils suffered an early exit from the 2021/22 edition of the Carabao Cup following a shock defeat to the Hammers.

West Ham had failed to win on their previous 17 visits to Old Trafford against Manchester United. Carlos Tevez was the last player to score a winner there for the London club back in May 2007.

Manchester United vs West Ham United: Match summary

This time round, it was yet another Argentine who did the damage. Manuel Lanzini swept home in the ninth minute after Ryan Fredericks ran past Man United’s Alex Telles, who looked rusty on his return from an ankle injury. Fredericks burst past the left-back and his deflected cutback from the byline was struck beyond Dean Henderson by Lanzini in front of the Stretford End.

United looked to respond strongly after going 1-0 down so early in the game. Juan Mata came close to a leveller in the first half with his shot hitting the crossbar.

Jadon Sancho saw a shot blocked and Anthony Martial sent a deft touch bobbling wide after Mata’s cross-shot rattled the crossbar as the home side launched wave after wave of attack.

Andriy Yarmolenko struck wide from 20 yards as West Ham threatened to extend their lead. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer turned to substitute Mason Greenwood to provide that missing spark in United’s play. It was a move that almost paid immediate dividends as he forced goalkeeper Alphonse Areola into a smart stop.

Yarmolenko somehow hit the post having gone round Henderson in the 86th minute. Two minutes later Mark Noble was played in by Jarod Bowen as United were exposed on the counter attack. Although, Noble saw his first-time shot stopped by Henderson.

The Man United goalkeeper denied Bowen soon after, but those missed chances did not prove costly for West Ham.

The hosts had 27 shots but could not find a way through. As a result, United find themselves out of the Carabao Cup very early in the tournament.

One of the few positives for Man United was that Dean Henderson made his first appearance of the campaign. He was out for a prolonged period having struggled with fatigue after contracting Covid-19. Alex Telles also made his first start of the campaign.
