Manchester United player ratings from their dreadful defeat against City

Here are our player ratings for Manchester United from their humiliating 4-1 defeat against Manchester City in the Premier League. They were well and truly beaten by a team that is miles ahead of them. Despite having the obvious edge talent-wise, City also seemed to want the win more.

United started the game poorly as they conceded their first goal just four minutes into the game. It was a disaster class in defending as Bernardo Silva was allowed to put in a low cross into the box which was side-footed into the goal by De Bruyne who was completely unmarked.

The away side thought they got back into the game when Sancho scored against his former club with a beautiful curling effort. Paul Pogba found Sancho in some space down the left-hand side. The winger then made his way to the edge of the City box and curled a shot around Stones into the far corner. The Citizens regained the lead just 6 minutes later. Phil Foden’s rebounded shot pinballed its way to De Bruyne who made no mistake from 7 yards out.

United went missing completely in the second half. They failed to register a single shot in the second half while City dominated over 70% of possession. City took the game away from United after Mahrez scored their third goal in the 67th minute. Mahrez latched onto the De Bruyne corner and stuck a first time half volley which went past De Gea at the far post with a little deflection off Maguire.

Manchester City put the final nail in the coffin in the 90th minute as Gundogan sent Mahrez through on goal who smashed his shot into the back of the net.

This defeat puts a huge question mark over United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Manchester United player ratings vs Manchester City

De Gea: 6/10

Could do little about the goals he conceded, but made some decent saves off Mahrez and Foden. Received no help from his defenders.

Wan-Bissaka: 4/10

City found a lot of joy down his wing. Looked off the pace from the start, and got worse in the second half.

Lindelof: 5/10

Spun way too easily by Foden for the second goal. Looked uncomfortable throughout the game. Tried some long balls, but was dealt comfortably by City.

Maguire: 5/10

Needs to own the armband and be more commanding in the backline. Got booked in the second half for a cynical foul on De Bruyne.

Telles: 5/10

Rarely found himself 1v1 against Mahrez but let the Algerian pass by too easily in the second half. Offered little to nothing going forward.

Fred: 5/10

Looked like a shadow on the pitch. Failed to track his runners from the midfield. Tenacious in the first half but got worse in the second half.

McTominay: 4/10

Failed miserably to contain De Bruyne throughout the game. A passer-by for most of the second half.

Pogba: 5.5/10

Set up Jadon Sancho‘s goal. He was United’s best player in the midfield. Faded away in the second half like many others. Taken off in the 64th minute.

Fernandez:5/10

Tried creating chances but was wasteful at times. Devoid of the ball for the second half. Involved in United’s best move of the game as Sancho squandered the chance.

Sancho: 6/10

Not the return to his former club he would have desired. Nevertheless, took his goal very well, even if it was only a consolation.

Elanga: 5/10

Looked lively in the first half. Dealt with some easy by Cancelo. Taken off in the 64th minute.

Substitutes

Lingard: 5/10

Came on in place of Paul Pogba. Could not influence the game at all.

Rashford: 5/10

Did not get a start despite the absence of Ronaldo and Cavani. One could barely tell he was on the pitch as United spent most of the second half in their box.
