According to reports, Manchester United players have been left ‘baffled’ by the United hierarchy’s decision to make Michael Carrick the club’s caretaker boss.

Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was relieved of his duties after the Red Devils suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Watford. With this defeat, United extend their bad run of form to just one win in their last seven league matches.

Manchester United have confirmed that Michael Carrick will be taking charge of the team as the intern manager, while the club finds a new manager. According to ESPN, several Manchester United players have questioned the hierarchy’s decision to make Michael Carrick the caretaker boss.

Other reports also suggest that there is massive doubt amongst several senior players that Carrick can make much of a difference in a role of more seniority. Manchester United players are fearful that results on the pitch are unlikely to improve any time soon.

Michael Carrick’s thoughts about getting the caretaker job

Taling to the press on Monday Carrick said that he is relishing the “privilege” of taking over as caretaker boss at Manchester United. He said:

“The biggest thing for fans is results. I could say all sorts of things about training and it would be the truth but honestly that doesn’t count for much.

“It’s about getting the right results and how we perform on the pitch. There is an expectancy at this club that doesn’t come with others.”

Carrick will take charge of his first game as caretaker boss as Manchester United’s Champions League clash against Villareal. Manchester United are currently the Group F leaders collecting seven points. While Villareal are also on seven points. The winner of the clash will have a great chance at qualifying into the knockout rounds.

What’s next for Manchester United?

The red devils have Zinedine Zidane, Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers, Luis Enrique and Erik ten Hag on their shortlist for their next manager. Luis Enrique has already ruled out the rumours of taking over at the red devils. While Brendan Rodgers has labelled the rumours as “disrespectful”.

Talking about Mauricio Pochettino, there are two different reports flying around as one says he is happy managing the French side and will stay there until his contract ends. While the other reports claim that he is unhappy at PSG and is eager to take up the United job.

While there is very little information about Zidane’s interest in being the Manchester United job. Several reports suggest that the Frenchman looks forward to managing the France national team in the near future.

However, Manchester United needs to react quickly if they want to see their four-season trophy drought ending soon.
