Manchester United to open talks for Leeds midfielder Philips

Manchester United have opened talks with Leeds United over Kalvin Philips. Philips is a central defensive midfielder and has been on United’s radar for some time now.

United have lacked a proper defensive midfielder ever since Ander Herrera left in 2019. They have used two players in double pivot- Fred and Scott McTominay. Both these players have to cover just a single position however they have been abysmal. Nemanja Matic , 33, is playing as a CDM however his age only allows him to play the odd game. Kalvin Philips is exactly what United is missing and could be just be the glue United require.

Kalvin Philips is the engine that keeps Leeds running. Philips possess excellent tactical awareness and also is great on the ball. He also is a gifted passer. He helps in the effortless transitioning of defense to attack.

Eric Ten Hag is to take on the managerial role at Manchester United. He will be looking to offload a large number of players in the Summer. The United board will give Ten Hag a sizeable transfer budget in the Summer.

Declan Rice was initially being considered however has a huge transfer fee around 150m. Kalvin Philips is a much cheaper and better option as he plays for Leeds who are the bottom half of the table.

Leeds Supporters would be devastated with the transfer of Philips to United

Leeds supporter and Pundit Paddy Kenny had shared his thoughts earlier on the move. He claimed Philips is in a similar situation as of Jack Grealish a year ago.

“He’s Leeds through and through but we saw that with Jack Grealish didn’t we? He’s Villa through and through but he decided to sign for Manchester City last summer, If an offer like that comes in, it might never come again. Can you afford to say no? It’s like Lampard at Chelsea. He didn’t know if it was going to work out but that offer might not come again, you have to take it.

It will be interesting to see if this move happens. The fans will be devastated if he does go. As a player, you have to look to the future and Leeds are a big club but Man United are one of the biggest in the world. It’s a difficult one to turn down, that’s for sure.”
