Arsenal and Liverpool have shown interest in Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio

Arsenal and Liverpool have shown interest in Real Madrid midfielder and winger Marco Asensio. Asensio was an integral part of the squad under Carlo Ancelotti that won the Champions League last season. The winger/attacking midfielder made 42 appearances in all competitions, contributing 12 goals and two assists in the process for Los Blancos.

Asensio’s current deal is due to expire next June. Moreover, he was told by Real Madrid that they will not be offering him a new contract this season. So, an exit from Santiago Bernabéu looks imminent for the Spanish player. However, it is unlikely that he will be without playing minutes next season. Multiple clubs have expressed their interest for the player to come to them next season. Chief among them are A.C Milan, Liverpool and Arsenal.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Real Madrid have informed interested parties that Asensio is available for between €25m (£21.6m) and €30m (£25.8m) in the current market due to his contract situation.

Marco Asensio’s fall from grace at Madrid

Asensio was once touted to be Real Madrid’s main man. Asensio continued to prove this statement true until his injury in 2019. He suffered a serious knee injury in a pre-season clash with Arsenal in July 2019. Since then he has sruggled with cosistency for the Madrid team.

Now, the Spaniard has fallen further down the pecking order in the Real Madrid midfield. Rodrygo and Federico Valverde are both now ahead of him when it comes to the right side of the Real Madrid attack. This means that there is less and less game time available for the Spaniard in Real Madrid. Reportedly, Asensio’s agent Jorge Mendes is pushing for an exit from Los Blancos.

Currently, he is not certain of a spot in the Spanish national team as well. However, he was included in their UEFA Nations League fixtures in June, providing assists in their two matches with the Czech Republic. No mmatter which club he goes to, playing minutes are going to be essential for the player.

Arsenal are the favourites to secure his signature this transfer window. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also an admirer of the Spaniard. However, Liverpool have already signed forward Darwin Nunez from Benfica. Moreoverr, Mo Salah’s contract renewal means that Liverpool are well stocked in the forwards department. So, it is unlikely that Asensio would go there. Milan are also interested in the attacker. However, the Italian outfit would struggle to match the wages that Arsenal and Liverpool could give to the player for a move to the Premier League.
