Martin Keown believes that 26-year old Liverpool defender is now back to his best

Liverpool

Martin Keown says Liverpool defender is looking back to his best now. Keown praised Liverpool man Joe Gomez after the clash of FA Cup. The Reds defeated Arsenal 2-0 at their home on Sunday. Jurgen Klopp’s men looked dull in their first half performance. However, the Kops army played brilliant during the second half and scored two goals before final whistle. Joe Gomez was given the task to play at left-back against young talent Bukayo Saka. Although he was lacking lustre in first half, he was very effective in the latter half. Speaking on BBC One, he said

“I think he’s an exceptional player. I’ve always been a big fan. He had a horrific injury a number of years ago. Ithink he’s getting back to his best. In a strange way he came in, Tsimikas came off, broke his collarbone in that game just a few weeks ago, and he came on and was quite magnificent [against Arsenal].

Gomez is now coming into top form. As a central defender, it’s never easy playing at full-back. He’s got pace, he can play and I think he’ll be honing in on Saka today.”

The Englishman has not been at his best since last few years. However, it seems that he is now settling in is boots again as he used to be three years ago. There were speculations of him leaving the club but now the equation seems to change. Indeed, his versatility in the backline is proving out to be a boom for Klopp in the absence of his full backs. He was having a key role in their Premier League glory three years back and also in the Champions League trophy.
