Premier League’s all time leading goal scorer, Alan Shearer has praised Chelsea for signing Mauricio Pochettino as the next manager of the club. Shearer claims that he admires the Argentine alot as a manager. The former PSG manager had a memorable time with Tottenham Hotspur, finishing in Top 4 in four out of the five seasons he was with the club. His most significant achievement however, was finishing as the runners-up of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League. Mauricio has gained a lot of admiration and praise for his tactics and playing style.
Pochettino comes to Chelsea with a lot of expectations resting on his shoulders. Despite his unsuccessful tenure with PSG, The Blues fans beleive that he is the right man for their club, who can bring glory days back. Chelsea experienced, what was arguably their worst season ever, last season. The sacking of Thomas Tuchel last year came as a huge shock and disappointment to the fans. However, it was nothing compared to what they went on to witness post the German manager’s departure from Stamford Bridge.
What did Alan Shearer say about Pochettino?
Speaking to The Rest is Football podcast, Alan Shearer gave his positive views on the new Chelsea manager. He said: “I think that was a good signing Pochettino. I think he is a very intelligent, clever manager and they are not going to be as bad as they were last season. Further he spoke about what he expects from Chelsea in the upcoming season. “I don’t see them challenging for the title. I think if they can go from where they were last season to then challenging for the top four again that would be success for them.”, said Shearer.
It seems clear that it is an important yet a challenging season coming up for The Blues. However, Pochettino appears to be the right manager in this crucial phase for them. With a massive turnover in the club, a new era has begun for Chelsea under Pochettino. 14 players have already left the club this summer, leaving a big void that is needed to be filled. Chelsea have made multiple signings so far and are still aiming for more.
Chelsea’s 2023/24 campaign begins on the 13th of August, 2023. Their first game itself comes as big challenge, as they take on the mighty Liverpool in the Premier League. Chelsea are not competing in any European competition in the upcoming season. Therefore, they can put their undivided attention and efforts to try and achieve their goal of finishing in the top 4 in the upcoming season.
