While Edouard Mendy’s horrible mistake against Real Madrid in the Champions League stole all the headlines. There was still plenty of stick for Romelu Lukaku who missed a glorious chance to bring his side right back into the game.

The defending European champions have one foot out of the competition as they suffered a horrible 3-1 defeat to Spanish giants Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Karim Benzema dominated the show. The French forward scored an excellent hattrick with two brilliant-headed goals in the first half.

While Kai Havertz did pull one goal back right at the end of the first half. But Edouard Mendy gifted Karim Benzema with his third goal of the night. The Chelsea goalkeeper rushed out of his goal and then played a horrible pass to Antonio Rüdiger, who got his pockets picked by the French forward. The tie seemed over and done, Romelu Lukaku had a great chance late on to pull the two-goal deficit down to one. But he placed the header just wide of the post. The striker missed from just six yards out. But to make things even worse, Lukaku was uncontested for the header.

Things have not gone quite to plan for both the striker and the club. Big things were expected from the Belgium striker after Chelsea broke their record transfer fee for the striker. With a return to Inter Milan looking more and more likely to happen in the summer. The return for Romelu Lukaku will go down as an even bigger failure than the first stint at the club.

Media’s reaction to Romelu Lukaku’s howler

Football pundit Tony Cascarino talking to talkSPORT about Romelu Lukaku’s horrible performance against Real Madrid, He said:

“player that’s lost total belief in his game.”

While former England international and now football pundit Karen Carney talking about Romelu Lukakau’s horrible miss said:

“the difference is, if that’s Benzema at the opposite end, that goes in”.

The Belgium striker was bouncing on opportunities like these for fun with Inter Milan last term. But it seems not only has he lost the starting role in the attack to Kai Havertz, but Lukaku has also lost the ability to find the back of the net. Chelsea will be hoping that they can move Romelu Lukaku on and get a good chunk of the money back that they invested in the striker back in the summer transfer window.
