Barcelona forward Memphis Depay will stay put at Barcelona this season despite Juventus’ interest in signing the forward this season. There was also speculation, albeit pretty late in the transfer window, that he can join Chelsea. However, the forward has put all speculations to rest. Depay has tweeted his decision to stay at Camp Nou this season. Depay said in his tweet:
“I have decided to stay at Barça ! Fully committed to contribute to the club’s sporting success.”
Xavi has made it clear Memphis Depay is a surplus to his requirements at Camp Nou. Depay was linked with a move away from Barcelona to Juventus for the entirety of August. Personal terms had already been agreed upon between the player and the club. However, the deal collapsed at the last minute due to the signing of Arkadiusz Milik on loan from Marseille. Many reports stated that Depay increased his asking salary to €7 million per year. Juventus were unwilling to pay this due to their difficult financial situation. Moreover, Juventus wanted Depay because they were sure that they could offload Adrien Rabiot to Manchester United. However, that deal failed as Manchester United went for Casemiro instead. This meant that Juventus had to prioritize the signing of Leandro Paredes and Milik
Chelsea late interest in Depay
Chelsea were on the verge of signing Depay along with Aubameyang. This was because of Chelsea’s lack of depth in the forward department. In the end, Aubameyang became a Chelsea player and Depay stayed at Barcelona. However, this might be a blessing in disguise for Depay, Aubameyang’s departure means Xavi has less depth of forwards. Consequently, Depay has a chance to start his Barcelona career afresh this season.
