Newcastle is reported to be just one step away from signing Zapata in the January transfer window. The Magpies are looking forward to signing their third big-name signing.
Meanwhile, they have made two high-profile signings in the form of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood. Now a third signing is reportedly knocking at the door for Newcastle.
The Colombian striker started his youth career at America de Cali and went on to earn senior caps with them. He went on to sign for Atalanta in 2018 on a two-season loan deal with an option to purchase.
He went on to score 29 goals in 46 appearances during his loan spell. As a result, in 2020, Atalanta exercised the purchase option and scored 36 goals in 72 appearances till now.
His current contract with Atalanta expires in the summer of 2023 and the Colombian is not looking to renew it. As a result, the Magpies could try to poach the striker from the Italian side.
Colombian daily El Tiempo claims that the Atalanta and Colombia striker has struck an agreement with the Magpies.
Newcastle’s chances in Zapata transfer
Newcastle United has been busy in this transfer window as they look to boost their squad. Meanwhile, two players Diego Carlos and Jesse Lingard have been heavily linked with them in recent days.
However, some reports claim that Newcastle is just one step away from signing the Colombian international.
As per Marca, Newcastle United has reportedly put forward a £37m offer. This revised offer came after Newcastle’s first offer was snubbed by the Italian side.
Zapata will apparently increase his income from £1.7m to £5.5m per year if he signs for the Magpies. This would go around £105,000-a-week for the 30-year-old striker.
The offer seems to be beneficial for all sides and it all stands down to the decision of the Atalanta management.
Zapata is a high-caliber player who has a great pace to take one-on-one with defenders. He possesses good off-the-ball movement, physicality, and powerful shots.
This season, he has 12 goals and seven assists from 22 Atalanta appearances. Zapata’s overall record for his club reads 152 appearances, 78 goals, and 38 assists.
So, it would be a great signing for the English side if they manage to pull the deal through.
