Southampton’s talented full-back Tino Livramento has made a permanent switch to Newcastle United. The Magpies had been in talks with Southampton to sign Livramento for a few weeks. Finally the club, yesterday, announced the signing of the player on their official social media handles.
Livramento came through Chelsea’s academy system as an intelligent and a skillful player. He was named the club’s Academy Player of the Year in 2021. He was also promoted to the club’s senior team in same the year. However, with Chelsea already having Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta as their preferred RB/RWB options, Tino was way down the order in Chelsea’s right back preferences. Therefore, the Englishman decided to make a move to Southampton that summer, for a deal worth £5 million.
Tino showcased his talent by having a great debut season with The Saints. He became a versatile and an impactful player for the club, offering returns in the defence as well as attack. However, a critical knee injury in 2022, forced the player to miss the remaining part of the 21/22 season and almost the entire 22/23 season.
Eddie Howe sees Livramento as a player for Newcastle’s future
There is no doubt that Eddie Howe ‘highly‘ rates Livramento. Even though the 20-year old only made a few appearances at the senior level, it was enough to convince Eddie Howe to bring Tino into his team. Newcastle paid a big amount of £30 million to Southampton to secure Tino’s signing, as Eddie Howe sees Livramento as a player for the the club’s future as well.
However, it is reported that The Saints will not be able to claim the entire amount that that earned from the sale. According to The Sun, Southampton will have to pay half the amount that they have received on Tino’s sale, to his former club, Chelsea. Both Chelsea and Southampton agreed to a deal in for Tino in 2021, which also included a sell-on clause. According to this clause, Chelsea had the right to claim 50% of the amount that Southampton might receive for Tino’s future sale. And now that The Saints sold the defender, the clause was activated, forcing them to pay £15m to Chelsea.
How will Eddie and Newcastle use Livramento?
Livramento’s role at Newcastle can be guessed to be a ‘rotation player‘. Newcastle already have a world-class right back with them. The club captain Kieran Trippier is currently recognised as one of the best full-backs in the world. It seems quite clear that Trippier will continue to remain Eddie Howe’s first choice right back, despite Livramento’s arrival.
The upcoming season is going to be very hectic one for The Magpies. They will be competing in 4 competitions, including the biggest one of them all, The UEFA Champions League. Eddie Howe will be required to rotate his squad regularly to keep his player fresh and fit. For the same reason, Newcastle have also bought multiple players this summer, to increase their squad depth.
Though Livramento might not be Newcastle’s first choice RB but the possible frequent rotations can give him ample game time. Also with Trippier turning 33 in September, Eddie Howe would want to save his captain mostly for the big matches. This will potentially give Tino, a decent number of opportunities to prove his worth.
Newcastle United play their first game of the new season against Aston Villa on 12th August. They would be hoping to start their campaign with a win, in what is a crucial season up ahead for them. It can also be the day when their new signing Livramento, make his debut for the club, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his career.
