Newcastle United are keen to make a move for Axel Witsel

Newcastle United are interested in acquiring Axel Witsel from Borussia Dortmund. Following which the club wishes to make a substantial offer to the Belgian enforcer.

Newcastle has supposedly made an attractive contract offer to Borussia Dortmund and Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel. While Witsel is also a transfer target for Serie A giants Juventus, according to Italian source TuttoJuve.

The 32-year-old midfielder’s contract with Dortmund ends at the end of the season. Following it appears that he will either go in January or on a free transfer next summer. As he reaches the last six months of his contract at Signal Iduna Park, the Belgian will be able to initiate negotiations and sign a pre-contract agreement with any club in the January transfer window.

The player’s contract position has aroused the curiosity of various teams throughout Europe. With Juventus aiming to recruit him on a Bosman deal next year as a substitute for Weston McKennie, who is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.

Unfortunately for Bianconeri, Newcastle has entered the battle to acquire Axel Witsel in January and are ready to pay a lot of money to do so. Dortmund bankrolls the Belgian superstar to the tune of €7 million every year. The Magpies, on the other hand, are proposing a deal worth about €10 million each season. An amount large enough to knock Juventus out of the race.

The Magpies have been linked to a slew of big players since their Saudi-led purchase was completed. Mauro Icardi, Eden Hazard, and Toni Kroos have all been mentioned as prospective transfer targets.

Many of these names are fictitious, concocted by agents and clubs to profit off Newcastle’s sudden fortune.

Why Axel Witsel to Newcastle?

Witsel, on the other hand, appears to be a far more feasible aim. Despite his talent as a midfielder, he has a history of securing big-money moves, as seen by his brief stays in Russia and China. Nonetheless, after joining Dortmund in the summer of 2018, he has rekindled his career and has been a staple in Die Schwarzgelben’s midfield. The Belgian enforcer has appeared in each of the Bundesliga club’s 18 games this season, demonstrating his value to the team.

Axel Witsel would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle, especially as he can be had for near to nothing.

Witsel is a defensive midfielder who can also play in the box-to-box position. He’s a good passer and a good reader of the game, so he can keep the game moving forward. With his plethora of top-level expertise, he would surely be an improvement over the majority of Newcastle’s current midfield lineup.

But, at 33-year-old, he isn’t getting any younger, and lavishing huge sums of money on a player who is only a few years away from retirement makes little sense. The St James’ Park club has been connected with Aurelien Tchouameni. A French midfield star who would be a more interesting choice than Witsel.

The main talking point

Currently, Newcastle is quite in a middle ground. This is due to their recent take over from their previous owners. Due to this and the signing of the new manager. It seems like the first thing on their plate is to avoid relegation. With that comes the added responsibility to be able to win games in the league.

After surviving that battle then only will they be able to sign new players. Be it either younger hidden gems or older players who are at the end of their career. One must note that if Newcastle fails to survive this season, they will be in the Championship once again. If they are back there it would be tough for the club to attract players who will help the club.
