It’s official as both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have confirmed the loan deal involving Antonie Griezmann in the last hours of deadline. Barcelona who were keen to offload the Frenchman all summer had no reason to turn down the Atletico offer. Initially, a two-year loan for Griezmann will become permanent with Atletico Madrid paying €40 million at the end of it.

The 30-year-old made his high amount move of €120 million to Barcelona in 2019, hoping to a bright future. But in his two-season spell, he was only able to lift the Copa Del Ray trophy last season. Playing for the Catalans Griezmann appeared 102 times scoring 35 goals and merely justified his high value.

Following his poor form and Barcelona’s bad financial situation, the club listed him for transfer this summer. Before agreeing to the loan deal on Tuesday, the Catalans and Atletico had another two deals fell off involving Griezmann. First, a swap deal between Griezmann and Saul Niguez and second another swap deal involving Jaoa Felix. However, in the last few hours of the summer transfer deadline, Barcelona have successfully loaded off Griezmann.

Griezmann returns to Atletico Madrid after 2 years

Reading Barcelona’s official statement, Griezmann will join Atletico Madrid on a two-year loan with Atletico paying the player’s full wage. And there is another clause included which states Atletico Madrid paying €40 million to Barcelona at the end of the loan deal.

In Griezmann’s first spell at Atletico Madrid, he appeared 257 times scoring 133 goals, and lifted three major trophies. And returning for his second spell he looks to add more as now Atletico are favorites to retain their La Liga title following their squad depth. However, Griezmann has to compete with the likes of Luis Suarez, Angel Correa, and Joao Felix for a spot in the upfront.
