After Arsenal defeated Manchester City on Sunday, Robbie Mustoe claimed he was having trouble coming up with a better center-back in the Premier League right now than William Saliba.
Mustoe was speaking on The 2 Robbies podcast after Mikel Arteta’s team made a big statement by defeating the Premier League champions 1-0 at the Emirates. Gabriel Martinelli scored the game’s lone goal.
William Saliba had little trouble continuing where he left off before suffering an injury late in the previous season. The Frenchman, who cost £27 million, has excelled while playing for the Arsenal first team. Arteta’s men lead all Premier League teams in goals allowed this season with the fewest.
And it was interesting that Erling Haaland had such a peaceful Sunday afternoon. David Raya experienced a trying day. However, it was not as though the opponents gave the Spaniard anything to work with.
Pundit believes William Saliba might be Premier League’s top center-back
This season, Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have both excelled. And according to the pundit, the 22-year-old is now outperforming Liverpool’s £75 million captain in his position as the best in the division.
Robbie Mustoe said on The 2 Robbies podcast
“I’m struggling. I’m just thinking of a better centre-back in the Premier League right now than William Saliba. I don’t know whether there’s one. Van Dijk will be mentioned by some. Saliba’s coming on unbelievably well.”
William Saliba’s fitness will be a factor in Arsenal’s title chances
The only consistency in the Arsenal backline has been Saliba. In the Premier League, he has not missed a single minute. He is also the only one of the back four who has not changed positions.
That serves as just another reminder of how crucial he is to the success of the Gunners. Arsenal supporters must be thinking what would have occurred if he had been healthy for the full season last year. One would assume that if he had been present for the run-in, the drop-off would not have been as severe.
Arsenal will undoubtedly have a great chance of winning this time around if they can manage to keep him healthy for the duration of this season.
