The addition of two new teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) will once again lead to a mega auction and Ravichandran Ashwin has already expressed his views over it. Meanwhile, BCCI released player retention policies.
The discussions regarding the strategies the team will use have grown immensely. R Ashwin, veteran Indian spinner, recently talked about the players Delhi Capitals can retain before the auction.
According to Ashwin, nor he nor Shreyas Iyer will be retained by the Delhi Capital franchise before the mega auction. According to the rules, each franchise can retain up to four players from their squad for the IPL 2021.
Among these four players, a maximum of three Indian players or a maximum of 2 foreign players can be retained. On the other hand, the two new teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad will choose three players from the un-retained players. After that, the auction will take place.
R Ashwin discussing about the auction
According to R Ashwin, after analysis of the new retention policy. He claimed on his Youtube channel that neither he nor Iyer will be retained by the Delhi franchise.
“Shreyas isn’t there I think. I am not there. So, someone else would have to come. I would have known if I were taken,”
said Ashwin on his Youtube Channel.
Ravichandran Ashwin was traded in for Jagadeesha Suchith from Punjab Kings before the start of the IPL 2019. Over the years, R Ashwin has gained a lot of experience in the shorter format. Since his arrival, Ashwin has played 28 times for the team.
He took 20 wickets with a healthy economy of 7.55. The veteran spinner had been an important part of the team since he came. Over the years, he had provided a lot of experience which the young Delhi side needed.
Shreyas Iyer has been a part of the Delhi franchise since the 2015 season. He was bought by the franchise for INR 2.6 crores in the auction back then. In the 2018 auctions, he was retained by the franchise and was soon named as the captain of the team.
Under Iyer’s captaincy, Delhi reached the knockout rounds of the IPL after seven years. In the following season, Iyer took the team to the finals where they lost eventually to the winners Mumbai Indians. While for this year, he has played in 86 innings for the team and has scored 1916 runs with an excellent average of 31.7.
Probable retaintions of players by Delhi
A team can retain a maximum of four players, that too either three Indians and one overseas or two overseas and two Indians. It looks like they will go with their current captain Rishabh Pant, attacking young opener Prithvi Shaw and South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje.
However, they can keep Indian fast bowler Avesh Khan or Axar Patel, a spin allrounder, as their fourth player. In the upcoming weeks, we will come to know all the players that are being retained or released by teams.
