Ralf Rangnick discusses his transfer targets before Man Utd snub

Former manager and transfer strategist Ralf Rangnick discusses his transfer targets before leaving his consultancy role back in 2022.

The 65-year-old was appointed to replace Ole Solskjaer in November 2021. The German was quite contradictory about club’s uncertain situation back then.

Rangnick was not allowed to sign players in January transfer window, as he had to wait for a permanent manager before spending any money. He said :-

“You don’t even need glasses to see and analyse where the problems are,” he memorably said towards the end of his spell as boss.

“Now it’s about how do we solve them? It’s not enough to do some minor amendments – cosmetic things. In medicine you would say that this is an operation of the open heart.”

However now speaking in a interview with German publication BILD, Ralf Rangnick discussed the transfer targets he wished to sign at United :-

“There was no such dossier, and it was never wanted by the club.

“But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.

“That’s why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from Leipzig. Those were names that were realistic.

“We also talked about Morata, Luis Diaz, Vlahovic and, as I said, Haaland when they were still on the market. But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach.”

“The answer at the time was no, there was no player on the market that could really help us.

“[But] there were a few: Diaz who is now at Liverpool, Alvarez who will be at City in the summer, Vlahovic who at the time still was with Fiorentina.

“Those are just three of them that come across my mind now.”
