Young Indian leg spinner, Ravi Bishnoi, was snubbed from the 15-member squad for the forthcoming T20 World Cup. He was not named in the final 15 and had to settle in the reserved category. After Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out, Bishnoi expected a call-up. But destiny had other plans. Axar Patel was picked ahead of the leggie and Bishnoi was moved to the standbys.
Ravi Bishnoi rose to fame after a successful IPL season with the Punjab Kings. As a result, he was picked for the national side and made his debut this year. He even featured in the T20 World Cup held last year. He has been impressive ever since his debut. The snub will surely disappoint the youngster. However, former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has come forward to his rescue.
“He has got age on his side,” Gavaskar backs Bishnoi
Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has backed the young leg spinner. He said that Ravi Bishnoi is young and he shouldn’t worry about missing one World Cup. Gavaskar further added that Bishnoi should take it as a lesson and learn to work hard. He needs to prove himself to a point that management can not even think of dropping him.
“Well, he has got age on his side. There is another T20 World Cup in a couple of years’ time. There are so many T20 World Cups that he can play in the future. He should now perform in such a way that he becomes undroppable. So that’s the only way to look at it. He is a young man, it’s a good experience for him to know he can’t get into every team”
Ravi Bishnoi responds to the veteran’s backing
Bishnoi has responded to the former cricketer. He said that if a player of Gavaskar’s stature is saying such kind words about him, then he surely must have done something good. He further added that such encouraging words are a major confidence booster for any young, budding cricketer.
“If he is backing me, then he must have seen something in me. And you get a lot of confidence from such greats who have ruled the world of cricket. It becomes meaningful”
Ravi Bishnoi further added that he learns a lot from the spin duo of Ashwin and Chahal. He stated his desire to pick Ashwin’s brains.
“Both are great spinners; Ashwin is different and Yuzi(Chahal) is different. I have spoken to Chahal a lot and he keeps telling me ‘you can improve here a lot.’ Meanwhile, Ashwin bhaiya has a different class. How he has this brain and how he keeps experimenting. I thought how can someone learn so quickly. I want to pick his brains”
