Rob Holding touted as Diego Carlos replacement at Villa Park

According to Estadio Deportivo, Aston Villa is interested in making a move for Arsenal centre-back Rob Holding this summer.

Mikel Arteta is seeking to get at least one more signing through the door before the month ends. Arsenal may have the chance to add to their transfer budget as Steven Gerrard’s team looks for a replacement for Diego Carlos. The Villains may end up paying a decent sum for the Englishman as they desperately need a defender, and the window is in its closing stages.

Diego Carlos is set to be out for a considerable period of time after an Achilles injury. He was one of Villa’s big-name signings of the window. As a result, they will be looking for someone to be a stop-gap solution. Villa feel that Holding can be an ideal candidate for their needs.

Holding to Villa: Can it Happen?

Holding has not been the first choice during his time at the Emirates. He has been behind the partnership of Ben White and Gabriel. With the arrival of William Saliba, minutes will be even more difficult to come by for Holding. The Frenchman has got off to a superb start to life in the Premier League, including a peach of a goal against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Holding made a £2 million move from Bolton Wanderers in the second division to the Premier League in 2016. Next month, the defender will turn 27. It is understandable that he would like to participate in more games while still at the top of his game.

Arteta might be given the go-ahead to sign a winger and/or a midfielder before the window closes if Arsenal could raise more money by selling Holding to Villa. The Gunners have spent big this summer, but still need to reinforce those positions.
