Indian Cricket Team was previously led by Virat Kohli in all 3 formats. After t20 WC 2021, he announced that he is not going to captain the team in the t20s. Subsequently, he was also removed from ODI captaincy by BCCI. In the last match of the test series against South Africa, he quit test captaincy too. Rohit Sharma then took the captaincy responsibility in all 3 formats. KL Rahul was selected as his deputy. Former West Indian captain and player, Darren Sammy believes that Rohit is a good leader and keeps his team first rather than his own personal achievements and scores.

Darren Sammy on the Indian Skipper

Darren Sammy statements:

I love the way he captains. That’s why Mumbai Indians have been one of the most successful IPL franchises. He is not a ‘him-first’ but a ‘team-first’ type of captain. When you have a leader that could motivate men, it doesn’t matter who does the job for the team, the team comes first. And Rohit Sharma comes across like that to me.”

You have an app on your phone and you have to keep updating it. When they won, that (old) method was okay. But when you have teams that are capable of hitting boundaries, their chances of them scoring quicker than you will always be there. If you consolidate too much, you set yourself back. And if the people consolidating get out, then you have two new batters coming in.”

“If you go hard and try to put the bowlers under pressure early, even if you lose wickets, you are so high in the run-rate, you can still consolidate. That’s what I see has changed with Rohit Sharma and India now. They have the personnel to actually do it. It would be interesting to see how it goes at this year’s World Cup in Australia. “

Darren Sammy believes Rohit Sharma to be a good leader who leads from the front. His biggest example of leadership is the success of Mumbai Indians in IPL. He is one the finest captain in the t20s currently. India is ranked one in ICC t20 rankings. He won a series against teams like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England, and so on in his short span of captaincy. His form was not up to the mark but his performance did not affect the team’s performance. He always keeps the team first.

Rohit led the team in Asia Cup 2022 where he ended the campaign on the losing side. His next challenge is the t20 World Cup in 2022 in Australia and 50 over the World Cup in 2023 on home soil.
