Inter Milan are close to welcoming back Romelu Lukaku, reports from Sky Sports claim. The Belgian striker left the Nerazzurri at the end of the 2020/21 season for a fee of 97.5 million pounds. He was bought by former club Chelsea and had high expectations.
Lukaku scored 47 goals and 13 assists in 2 seasons at the San Siro was an impressive return. He formed a formidable partnership with Lautaro Martinez under Antonio Conte. They led Inter to their first league title in 10 years, ending Juventus’ dominance. A big future was expected, but Lukaku had other ideas.
However, the return to Chelsea was underwhelming, to say the least. Despite an impressive debut against Arsenal, Lukaku could not cement himself into the team. Injuries and a failure to adapt to Tuchel’s system caused frustration for the ex-Man United striker. It led to a controversial interview, where Lukaku criticized the manager’s approach and talked about a future return to Inter.
What Lukaku Said
Physically I am fine. But I’m not happy with the situation at Chelsea. Tuchel has chosen to play with another system – I won’t give up, I’ll be professional. I am not happy with the situation but I am professional – and I can’t give up now.
I think everything that happened last summer was not supposed to happen like this… how I left Inter, the way I left the club, how I communicated with Inter fans – this bothers me because it was not the right time.
Now it’s the right time to share my feelings. I have always said that I have Inter in my heart: I know I will return to Inter, I really hope so. I am in love with Italy
Now a return seems close. Chelsea will loan out Lukaku to Inter, and will hope to get some of his wages off the books. Chelsea are demanding 10 million Euros as a loan fee, and Inter are negotiating the price. But if reports are to be believed, a price will be agreed upon soon.
