Former AC Milan legend Ruud Gullit shares his views on current state of Manchester United. Gullit said that two players are really struggling on the ball right now at United. The Red Devils played a 3-3 draw against Galatasaray in the Champions League. Erik ten hag’s side were in a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes at RAMS Park. However, they let this lead slip out of their hands and settle for a draw. This is a shell-shock to the dreams of their Champions League campaign as they can now be eliminated in group stages.
Speaking on Bein Sports, Gullit highlights the playing styles of Maguire and Victor Lindelof as a key reason for their struggle last night. He said,
“The problem is that from the back he has no players who can play that football.
He thinks what can I do now? He hoped that Varane could do it, but he’s more injured than anyone else. Then he had Martinez, he’s a good player, he can play. He did well for them. But he’s injured.
So now he has to do it with these two but Maguire is not the best on the ball, he doesn’t build up. Lindelof is the same thing. So his goalkeeper is the one who does the build-up all the time, but that is not his job. Therefore he has difficulty playing from the back.”
Gullit made some concerning points for United management
The defensive pairing of Lindelof and Maguire was unable to resist three goals from the Turkish side. Although, a huge credit of draw goes to Andre Onana but the centre-backs were looking ineffective at counters as well. With Varane and Lisandro Martinez injured, Ten Hag needs to overhaul his defense in the upcoming window. Though, it was a super-entertaining game of football for the fans. Perhaps, the dreams of Champions league may end for the English side next month but they must learn from this. The upcoming window will serve them with a huge opportunity to reinforce some defensive players and challenge in the Premier League.
