Pundit Joy Bothroyd claims that Arsenal defender William Saliba is not happy with Manager Mikel Arteta and thus playing a hardball in contract talks.

Saliba joined Arsenal in 2019 from French side Saint-Etienne. The Frenchman was viewed as one of the best young defenders in the world back then.

The 22-year-old has been revelation this season for Arsenal, as he finally got the chance to prove himself.

Currently, Saliba is entering his final year of his contract at Arsenal. Bothroyd believes that the negotiations between both the parties are taking a tough turn.

Just months after Saliba’s inclusion, Unai Emery was sacked and Mikel Arteta replaced him. He was send back to loan back at Saint-Etienne.

He then returned to Arsenal in the following summer and become part of the team. However, Arteta though he was not ready back then.

Arteta send the Frenchman out on loan twice – first at Nice and second at Marseille. Bothroyd believes that ‘upset’ Saliba and that’s why the contract negotiation is taking time.

Bothroyd posted on his Twitter handle:-

“Honestly I think Saliba has every right to demand similar money to top Arsenal earners.

“It wasn’t long ago that Chambers and Mari were chosen ahead of him, Arteta saying he’s not progressing fast enough! That obviously upset him, now Saliba holds the cards you have to pay him.”

Saliba will enter final year of his contract in the summer and latest report suggests Arsenal ‘shocked’ with his demands. The Gunners may not agree with his high wage demand.

It can backfire on Arsenal, if Saliba is really upset with Arteta. However, it will be interesting to see what will happen in the coming weeks.
