As per recent reports, Tottenham Hotspur are showing interest in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez. The player who has recently hit the limelight is also one of the targets of Italian giants Juventus.

The 22-year-old striker rose to fame after joining the Portuguese club last summer. In half of his debut season, he had a total of 16 goal involvements, after he had made the move from UD Almeria for a fee of €24 million.

It is being speculated that Tottenham are ready to battle it out with the Old Lady to get the player’s signature. Spurs manager Antonio Conte seems eager to sign the young forward with their talisman, Harry Kane’s future, still in doubt.

Potential reasons for rising interest in Nunez by Tottenham

In almost 1.5 years at the club, the Uruguayan international has sealed a spot in the team’s main starting-11. In 13 games this season at Benfica, Nunez already has 8 goals and 2 assists.(stats via TRANSFERMARKT)

He is efficient both as a winger and center forward, while his physique matched with his speed has made him a threat that defenders wish to avoid. The player has also troubled bigger giants namely FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, with him scoring a brace against the former in the Champions League this season.

Under Jorge Jesus, Nunez has found quite a superb form and often drifts away from his position to catch the opposition on the break. The player is one of the most interesting Uruguayan strikers to watch after the already established Luiz Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

Why should Spurs get Nunez and what would he bring to the team

The Lilywhites haven’t had a great start to the season as they had to sack their manager Nuno Espirito Santo after a few games into the season. The club shifted to the services of Antonio Conte who is yet to prove himself with the team.

Meanwhile, the team’s star player Harry Kane has not found his form yet this season. The Englishman was the Premier League’s Player of the Season and Golden Boot winner last season but has only scored one goal in 11 games this season. Many believe his dip in form is due to the fact that the player was seeking an exit from the club but failed to do so.

Hence, Conte could look to strengthen his attacking side with the addition of Nunez. While rather than being a potential replacement, he could play alongside Kane and Son Heung-Min.
