“Shreyas’ absence will make a difference” says KKR head coach

Cricket

Shreyas Iyer has decided to postpone his back surgery so that he can be considered for selection in the squad for the WTC final. He visited the NCA in Bangalore on Wednesday, March 29 with the aim of recovering quickly before the final. The final is set to take place from June 7 to 11 at The Oval in London.

During the fourth Test match, the 28-year-old batter reported pain in his lower back. Further he was ruled out of the match. He was also unable to participate in the ODIs against Australia and is expected to miss the upcoming IPL 2023.

Last week, the NCA advised Shreyas Iyer to delay his surgery in order to be available for the crucial WTC final. If he had undergone surgery, it would have required a six-month recovery period and potentially excluded him from the ODI World Cup.

According to Cricbuzz, it has been reported that the player will receive back injections to address his back issues. The medical staff at the NCA will monitor his progress for any further developments.

“He has met the specialist and the NCA officials. All are on the same page that the operation can be deferred. He will follow the experts’ advice.” according to Cricbuzz.

Rana to lead in Shreyas Iyer’s absence

Shreyas Iyer’s injury has negatively impacted his chances of participating in the upcoming IPL 2023. Nitish Rana has been appointed as the leader of the Kolkata Knight Riders in Iyer’s absence. However, there is still a glimmer of hope that Iyer might be able to make a comeback and play a few matches later in tournament. During a press conference, KKR’s head coach Chandrakant Pandit suggested the possibility of Iyer’s involvement in the tournament.

“Shreyas’ absence will make a difference since he is important, but this is truly unfortunate. We are hoping Shreyas will be back very soon and that will make a lot of difference to the team. Chandrakant Pandit said.

During the IPL 2022, Shreyas Iyer was the highest run-scorer for KKR, but the team struggled to perform well under his captaincy. KKR are scheduled to play their first game of the IPL season against the Punjab Kings in Mohali on April 1, 2023.
