India was knocked out of the tournament after Afghanistan’s loss against Pakistan. But India played very well in their last match. They were brilliant both in the batting and bowling department. The hero of the match was Virat Kohli and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Virat scored his 71st international century and Bhuvi picked up a fifer with the economy of 1.00. Indian Captain KL Rahul was asked in the interview whether it is possible to make Virat the opener. So he replied befittingly,

” So you want me to sit out? “

KL Rahul replied on Virat playing as an opener for India

KL Rahul statement:

“So, what do you want me to do- sit out?” Virat scoring runs is a huge bonus for us. He must be pleased with his batting. He has been working on his game since the last 2-3 series and it has come off beautifully. If you play 2-3 innings like this, you get confidence. Happy he could play that way.

The designated captain Rohit Sharma was rested for that match, so Virat was promoted as an opener. He played fearlessly and scored his maiden t20 ton. Fans and cricketing experts wanted Virat to come back into form as soon as possible. All wanted him to score runs. So the interviewer asked whether he can be played as an opener so that he gets more game time. But it is not really the case. As the openers for T20 cricket are almost fixed with Rohit – Rahul.

Virat is a senior player and the most experienced batsman on the team. So he is well placed at his own position is 3rd. He balances the team. Such a balance manages both upper order and middle order and he has scored runs as well. He has scored a lot at the number 3 position. KL Rahul himself accepted that he will definitely score many runs as well as hundreds at the number 3 position.

Virat stats as an opener

Virat scored almost 900+ runs as an opener while playing for his franchise in IPL. In international cricket, he averages just 39 as an opener while his average is 52 when positioning himself at number 3. He recorded the highest score in t20i in an innings by an Indian Batsman. Virat Kohli’s 80 not out against England is his highest T20I score as an opener in eight innings.

KL Rahul further added,

“It is not like he can hit hundreds only when he is opening. If he can bat at number three then also he can score centuries and it is about the role the team wants him to play. Today he played his role beautifully. He will play his next role in the next series with good performances, no question mark about that. The desire and passion to win matches for his country have always remained the same for him. But, we are obsessed with numbers. His contributions over the last 2-3 years are still phenomenal. He is still among the top two or three run-getters in white-ball cricket.”
