Liverpool signed Luis Diaz near the deadline, however, Spurs were also monitoring the Colombian and made a blunder in an attempt to sign him. According to Record, Spurs sent a contract with Diaz’s name to Bentancur’s lawyer. Many people were surprised by this Spurs mistake, according to Sport Witness.
Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Rodrigo Bentancur on a permanent deal and Dejan Kulusevki on a loan deal. Both of them were signed on deadline day and it is possible that the mistake was because of the rush. Spurs made an attempt to sign Luis Diaz before Liverpool but it wasn’t enough.
Eventually, Luis Diaz did end up at Liverpool but that could have been a different story if it was not for that mistake. Tottenham also missed out on signing Adama Traore who ended up rejoining Barcelona. Nevertheless, it was a good transfer window for Spurs as they got two brilliant midfielders at bargain prices.
These kinds of blunders are very rare in football but as we say ‘anything can happen in football’. It can be excused because it did not have much of an impact but there certainly must have been talks inside the Spurs boardrooms. We will have to wait and see if this blunder will come on and haunt Spurs later.
What would have happend if Spurs did not make the blunder and signed Luis Diaz?
Spurs were fighting with Liverpool for the signature of Luis Diaz and were also close to signing him. They were so confident that they had prepared a contract but failed due to a huge blunder. Spurs would have had one of the best transfer windows in Europe if they had signed Luis Diaz.
Not only that but Liverpool also would have missed out on the Colombian and would have been left without a signing in January. Liverpool might also offload some players as they have signed Diaz. That would not have been possible if Spurs did not make the blunder. Diaz would have given tough competition to Heung-Min Son at Spurs.
Conte‘s squad would have gotten stronger and would have a better go at finishing third in the Premier League. They still do have a chance to finish third which many people didn’t believe is possible after the first few games. Diaz still might have to work more in order to get picked ahead of Salah and Mane. However, he had more chances of getting picked at Spurs and more chances of involvement.
Nevertheless, Luis Diaz looks happy joining Liverpool ahead of Spurs as he has made Liverpool’s case strong for the Champions League. Although they are now far behind in the title race from Manchester City, they still have the Champions League, FA Cup, and the EFL Cup final against Chelsea. Luis Diaz can provide the needed depth to the Liverpool squad. Moreover, he can also act as a replacement for a winger who might depart in near future.
