Recent reports coming to the surface have revealed that BCCI might host the 15th season of the IPL in either South Africa or Sri Lanka. This step has been taken as India is facing a serious rise in COVID-19 cases across the country.

The last two seasons were hosted by the UAE because of the pandemic. The first half of 2021 IPL was held in India but was postponed because of rising cases. Thus, UAE hosted the second leg in September-October last year.

Sri Lanka Cricket expresses wish to host IPL 2022

Sri Lanka Cricket has expressed its wish to host the 15th edition of the cash-rich league. Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket, Mohan de Silva told in an interview to Cricbuzz,

We have seen reports and we will be happy to host the IPL in Sri Lanka. We will initiate talks with the BCCI regarding this soon. The Covid situation is not bad here in Sri Lanka and you can be assured we will be very warm hosts.

Because of the emergence of Omicron, COVID’s newest variant, the number of fresh cases is arriving in thousands every day.

The government is trying to deal with this situation and taking all possible steps to curb it.

Preparation for the next edition is undergoing. It will be a 10 team tournament this time around as Lucknow and Ahmedabad have also entered the league.

The dates of the Mega Auction have also been finalized. It will be held on February 12-13.

The existing 8 teams have kept back 27 players in their squads. The list contains a total of 19 Indian and 8 foreign players.

The two new franchises can pick three players from the released pool of players. The deadline for the same is the 22nd of January.
