According to several reports, Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij has opened up on his interest in joining Tottenham Hotspur. The reports claim that the player has informed his close contacts that he wants to switch to the English club.

Stefan de Vrij joined Inter Milan in 2018 and has been the team’s starting centre-back ever since. The Dutchman has played under Spurs’ manager Antonio Conte for 2 seasons at Inter Milan. He also lifted the 2020/21 season Serie A title under the Italian’s management.

The Lilywhites are being linked with many Inter Milan players after Conte’s takeover. As a result, De Vrij has told his close mates that he is aware of Spurs’ interests and has stated that he is open to a possible switch.

Stefan De Vrij could boost Tottenham defence

The Dutchman left Feyenoord in 2018 to join Inter. He is the team’s holding CB in their 3-5-2 formation. He has made a total of 139 appearances for the Italian side and has scored 8 goals. Being the team’s main CB, he has opened this season in a similar manner, starting in all but one of their league games and all four Champions League outings so far. (stats via TRANSFERMARKT)

The 29-year-old player is a confident and dominating defender. His tall and structured physique makes him a strong man to beat. While he prefers to move the ball quickly to advance plays. Even in pressure situations, the Dutchman does not lose his composure and concentration.

His defensive abilities were crucial in I Nerazzurri’s 20/21 Serie A campaign. His discipline and leadership at the back are highly praised by Conte who wants to bring the player to his new team.

Should Conte push for De Vrij?

Spurs had a shaky start to the season and had to sack their former manager Nuno Espirito Santo. The Lilywhites appointed Antonio Conte as their new manager, believing that he could bring the change required at the club. With a defensive weakness, the club signed defenders Christian Romero and Emerson Royal in the summer.

However, the players are yet to deliver in the Premier League. Meanwhile, the 52- year-old manager believes that the team needs more disciplined and experienced players.

Hence, Spurs have made De Vrij a prime target for the January transfer window. The player is also ready to come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with his contract expiring in June 2023.
