Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel hails defender Thiago Silva and tells him how to earn a new contract at Stamford Bridge.
The 37-year-old’s existing deal at the London club is due to expire next June. But, Tuchel has suggested that the Brazilian could potentially stay for another season beyond this one. Silva could earn himself another one-year contract at Chelsea if he enjoys a strong campaign for the club.
“It’s on him. He has to perform at this kind of level and that’s all he needs. It’s as easy and clear as that. When you play for Chelsea, you need to deliver and that is what he is doing. He is a top professional and if he wasn’t, it wouldn’t be performing at that level for many years”, Tuchel told reporters.
“The only question we have to ask at the end of the season is this: Is he at the level to compete for Chelsea in every competition? We don’t have to answer that right now.”
Thiago Silva: Impact at Chelsea
Chelsea signed Thiago Silva on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 from Paris Saint-Germain.
Silva greatly impressed last season, helping the Blues win the UEFA Champions League , reach the FA Cup final and secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.
In June, Chelsea confirmed Silva had signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until the summer of 2022. However, his impressive start to the new season has already led to speculation he could sign yet another new deal.
The centre-back has been in spectacular form for the Blues in the early stages of the 2021-22 season, scoring once in four appearances in all competitions.
Thiago Silva has made 38 appearances for Chelsea since arriving from Paris in 2020. There were reservations about signing a then 36-year-old, especially bringing him to the Premier League. Although, it is safe to say that Silva has proved his haters wrong, and the Brazilian veteran continues to impress in England.
