Tottenham end pursuit of Nicolo Zaniolo

Tottenham’s pursuit to sign Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo seems to have come to an end. The Serie A team have decided to keep hold of the Italian for the time being.

Despite some assertions to the contrary, Corriere Dello Sport report that Tottenham’s chances of getting  Nicolo Zaniolo are all but gone. They explicitly state that as things stand, there are no teams that can offer Roma €50m. This includes any possibility of a loan with a binding option to purchase in the following year.

AS Roma are therefore relying on their star to remain for the ongoing season. Tottenham is unwilling to meet that price, and their former manager José Mourinho has made it clear that Zaniolo is an integral part of his squad in the future.

Spurs did try, as evidenced by the numerous reports we reported that suggested bids were made and discussions were undertaken. Their director of football Fabio Paraticci did come to Italy to push for a move, but it never materialised.

The Friedkin family was the one who reportedly pulled the plug on the saga. Zaniolo is now “destined to remain” in Rome and form an attacking trio which boasts the likes of Tammy Abraham and Paulo Dybala. There are also talks of a contract renewal in the future.

The Alternative to Zaniolo

Spurs have since then turned their attention towards Ruslan Malinovski of Atalanta. The Ukrainian midfielder is 29 years old and in the last year of his contract. A deal can be fairly easy to complete as compared to the one for Zaniolo.

Malinovksi can add some much-needed creativity to the Spurs midfield. Moreover, he has a great long shot on him, while being a threat at set pieces as well. He can be a fine addition to Conte’s side, who are yet to lose in their opening three games.
