Thomas Tuchel has admitted that Chelsea were quite lucky to hold on to their lead in the final stages against Brentford on Saturday.

The game had a slow start but came to life after the 23rd minute when Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo’s shot hit the post. Following the missed opportunity, Chelsea went up the other end and Romelu Lukaku did score. But it was ruled out for offside. Timo Werner missed a glorious chance after he fired a shot over the bar from inside the box in the 37th minute.

Chilwell scored a stunning half volley into the top corner right before half-time. In the second half, Brentford had many chances. Ivan Tony’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Mendy. Bryan Mbeumo hit the post for the second time in the game. Mendy produced three fantastic saves in the final 10 minutes of the game, saving shots to deny Saman Ghoddos and Pontus Jansson. And pulling off a stunning fingertip save to deny Christian Norgaard’s volley in stoppage time.

Tuchel comments on Chelsea vs Brentford game

Tuchel in his interview said

“In the end, the last 20 minutes were suddenly a cup game. They had nothing to lose and they eventually found momentum. It felt like we had one player less once Brentford had thrown more players. We were not clear enough in the challenges. They found the belief and we focused too much on defending. I was very content with the first 65-70 minutes where maybe we should have scored more.”

“It helps if we have Rudiger or Thiago Silva to help calm the game down and with that first touch to counter the pressure and we trust the guys who are young if you don’t play you cannot get experience.”

Chelsea now sit on top of the Premier League table with 19 points. Having won six of their eight matches so far in the league.
