Why do Arsenal have already a hand on Ivan Toney than Chelsea

Arsenal

The two London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea are in the hunt for Brentford man Ivan Toney. However, it seems as of Arsenal are a step ahead of Chelsea in the race for Toney. The England international is currently out due to suspension and will be back on 16 January the following year. He will eventually be left with only 18 months on his contract and the Bees are looking to set a €100m tag on him.

According to The Independent, Arsenal are currently leading the race for the striker. The reports says that if Chelsea are to sign him, they will have to consider selling some players. Noticeably, the Blues have spent over £1billion since the arrival of Todd Boehly last year. So as to comply with Profit and sustainability rules, they cannot make anymore signings without departures. Moreover, Arsenal’s current position in the League can also influence Toney to make-up his decision of the club.

While the West Londoners cannot assure the striker a title shot or a Champions League spot, Arsenal must capitalise. However, Jamie Redknapp believes that Boehly must sign Brentford ace as soon as possible. Speaking on Sky Sports after Chelsea’s win over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, he said,

“There are still more questions than answers when I watch Chelsea at the moment. I look at that squad and they have spent a billion pounds and still don’t have a number nine.

If you look at strikers out there, Ivan Toney is obviously one you are going to go for, but how much is he going to cost? There’s not many, they are a tough breed to find but that’s exactly what they need.”
