Why Manchester City accepted Chelsea’s Cole Palmer offer, according to Fabrizio Romano

Cole Palmer’s transfer from Manchester City to Chelsea was one of the more unexpected deals of this summer transfer market. The teenage player joined the Blues in the summer transfer window for £40 million plus add-ons. Pep Guardiola is said to have been a great fan of what the England U21 star had to offer, despite the fact that the 21-year-old was yet to make a major impact at City. Palmer performed well for the England squad that won the Under-21 Euros. In addition, he made a strong start to the season with Manchester City. He scored against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup and against Arsenal in the Community Shield.

However, the player himself may have believed that he would need to transfer somewhere in order to gain regular playing time because there were so many world-class talents ahead of him in the pecking order in Manchester City. At the end of the day, Manchester City had little choice but to let the talent develop at Stamford Bridge.

In his CaughtOffside Substack, Fabrizio Romano wrote,

“With Cole Palmer, Chelsea really insisted, were pushing for two days and the player was also keen on the move. So for Manchester City the best thing to do was to accept and make the most amount of money possible.”

Mauricio Pochettino responds to the transfer of Cole Palmer from Manchester City.

Recently, Mauricio Pochettino gave an explanation of Palmer’s decision to pursue a move to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City as well as the reasons the club recruited Palmer. Pochettino said,

“I think he fits the project. He is a young, talented player. Of course, he decided to come because he expects to play maybe more and be more important here [than at Manchester City], but that is not the most important thing. He wanted to come because he has seen the Chelsea project is for him.”

Pochettino further added,

“He wants to improve his game and he needs to show he is better than his team-mates and deserves to play and find his place. We need to be careful with young guys, like experienced players they need time to settle.”

The fans of Chelsea are eager to watch Cole Palmer in action. Chelsea were successful in luring in another outstanding young talent from Manchester City. The transfer is also consistent with Mauricio Pochettino’s normal tactic of fielding a young, energetic team that is sprinkled with experience.

After sinking to new lows last season under Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Frank Lampard, the Blues fans and everyone associated with the club had something to look forward to once more.
