Youri Tielemans move to Arsenal impeded. Tottenham interested in signing the player
Youri Tielemans, the Leicester midfielder, was linked with a move to Arsenal for some time. The rumor had gained a lot of momentum and a move to the Etihad looked very much on the cards. Mikel Arteta was reportedly pushing for a move for Tielemans with a cut fee of around £25m. Tielemans was also interested in playing with the Gunners
Earlier reports from Fabrizio Romano had touted Tielemans as Arsenal’s primary midfield target In his Caught Offside blog, he wrote the following about Arsenal’s midfield
“Arsenal are taking their time in choosing the new midfielder. Ruben Neves and Arthur Melo have been two names on the list for some time, two very popular players in the club; the priority as of now goes to Youri Tielemans.”
Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with Lille midfielder Amadou Onana. Amadou Onana is 20 years old and is rated very highly. He is Arsenal’s alternative for Tielemans. His overall playing style is similar to that of Tielemans. Moreover, he is a young prospect with some first team experience.
Reports have emerged that Arsenal are using talks with Onana as a smokescreen to complete the deal with Tielemans. Moreover, this might also be a strategy of Arsenal to get Leicester to reduce their asking price even further.
Tottenham Hotspur interest for Tielemans
Michael Bridge, the Sky Sports journalist, has claimed that Tottenham have always admired Youri Tielemans. Speaking to Chris Cowlin via This is Football, the journalist has stated that we shouldn’t be surprised if the Belgian is sought out by Spurs to strengthen their midfield.
“I’m not saying that there have been any bids, but I know there’s always been people at the club that have admired him, even back in the Poch era. …….. He’s[ Tielemans] an attacking-minded midfielder that Tottenham are keen to look at. I don’t think that’d be anywhere near, but that’s someone that I have heard not to completely rule out in future.”
Spurs are building a title-winning squad for Antonio Conte. They have backed their manager since his arrival in November. The club signed Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, and Ivan Perisic for the Italian. Recently, Spurs announced the signing of Everton star center forward Richarlison to further bolster their squad. Tielemans will further bolster the club’s quest for trophies.
Tielemans contract will run out next year. This has made Leicester desperate to sell the player this season. Leicester would rather lose Tielemans for a fee in this window than see him depart on a free transfer in a year’s time
