AC Milan triumphs as Popovic picks Serie A side over Manchester City

Manchester City

Manchester City’s pursuit of 18-year-old Serbian wonderkid Matija Popovic seems to have hit a roadblock as AC Milan edges closer to securing the talented striker’s signature. According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, AC Milan has successfully fended off a late attempt by Manchester City to snatch him on a free transfer.

Fabrizio Romano shared on X,

“AC Milan are closing in on a deal to sign Matija Popovic as a free agent from Partizan! Popovic has turned 18 yesterday and he can now sign documents as Milan is finally prepared to seal the deal. Man City tried to hijack the deal, but AC Milan has always been confident.”

The young striker, often compared to Michu, is one of the Europe’s most promising forwards. In the 2022/23 season, he showcased his goal-scoring ability. He netted 20 goals in just 24 appearances for FK Partizan Belgrade’s U17 side.

AC Milan’s strategic win in the Popovic Pursuit

Despite Manchester City’s unsuccessful bid for Popovic, it may not be a significant setback for the club. Pep Guardiola currently has a formidable striking duo in Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez, leaving little room for additional talent. AC Milan, on the other hand, appears better positioned to offer the Serbian international valuable playing time in senior football.

Moreover, the financial contrast between the Premier League and Serie A could work in Manchester City’s favor in the future. The club might have the opportunity to secure Popovic later on if he fulfills his considerable potential.

In essence, while Manchester City faces a setback in their immediate pursuit of Popovic, the long-term perspective suggests that the door is not entirely closed. The club’s patience and strategic approach could eventually see them benefit from the Serbian talent’s growth, maintaining their reputation for nurturing emerging football stars.
