In spite of competition from Chelsea and Manchester City, Alexis Mac Allister’s father has explained why his son decided to sign for Liverpool this summer.
During a three-and-a-half year stint with Brighton & Hove Albion, Mac Allister established himself as one of the Premier League’s top young midfielders. His place as one of the game’s upcoming stars was solidified by his key contribution to Argentina’s World Cup victory in 2022.
The 24-year-old’s transfer away from the Amex Stadium was inevitable in the summer transfer window. A number of other elite Premier League teams were keen to secure a deal.

But Alexis Mac Allister’s father, Carlos, explained in an interview with the Liverpool Echo why he preferred the Reds to Chelsea and Manchester City. He said
“The reason why Alexis went to Liverpool is because they showed so much interest in having him on their team. They showed a desire to count on him. We wanted Alexis to go to a team where he could be settled for the start of pre-season; move on the first day of the transfer window – all that stuff. This was so important because we wanted him to have a good preparation with the team he decided to sign with.”
Alexis Mac Allister’s father further added
“Jurgen Klopp was crucial a figure in the transfer. He was talking with Alexis. When he received the phone call from Jurgen it was important in deciding which team he should choose to play for. Already Alexis likes to work with Jurgen, and Jurgen likes to work with Alexis. I think that is very important for a player to train at a place where you feel loved. Also your trainer and mates trust you at every moment.”
Alexis Mac Allister was one of four midfielders that Liverpool acquired during the summer transfer window. The other three were Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
Liverpool missed out on the signings of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea in the summer. Alexis Mac Allister has played almost exclusively in a new defensive midfield position so far this season. He might face off against his brother, Kevin in the Europa League. Klopp’s team hosts Belgian upstarts Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League group stages.
