Andy Robertson’s prolonged absence tests Liverpool’s defensive depth

Liverpool’s left-back conundrum continues to be a pressing issue as Jurgen Klopp provides updates on Andy Robertson’s prolonged absence.

Since dislocating his shoulder on international duty with Scotland in October, Robertson’s return remains uncertain. With Kostas Tsimikas, his stand-in, also sidelined, the concern heightens for the Reds’ defensive depth.

Klopp, in his pre-Newcastle press conference, shared that Andy Robertson’s recovery progress is ‘slower than anticipated‘.

The manager quoted,

Robbo still needs more range in his shoulder… it shows us that there’s a long way to go.”

Though Andy Robertson is in individual training, his return to full action seems distant. Klopp suggests a possibility for January, emphasizing the necessity for Robertson to progressively approach full fitness.

Additionally, Klopp addressed Alexis Mac Allister’s situation, indicating a decision pending on his readiness for team training, which adds to Liverpool’s uncertainty in midfield.

Andy Robertson’s recovery challenges

The setback in Andy Robertson’s recovery wasn’t entirely unexpected, with initial estimates pointing towards a return closer to the end of January. However, the prolonged absence poses challenges, especially considering Tsimikas’s injury.

While the Greek had admirably deputized for Robertson earlier, his absence now amplifies the left-back concerns for the Reds.

Amidst speculations of a January transfer, names like Antonee Robinson from Fulham have emerged as potential solutions to bolster Liverpool’s defensive options.

In the interim, Liverpool’s reliance falls on Joe Gomez to fill the left-back role. However, Gomez himself has sparked transfer rumors, particularly with interest from Tottenham Hotspur. Despite the rumors, Klopp’s side heavily relies on Gomez’s versatility amid defensive challenges.

Although Andy Robertson’s return seems plausible in the coming month, Liverpool face an immediate need for defensive reinforcements. The ongoing absence presents a test of patience for the club and its supporters, as they await crucial recoveries to fortify their squad depth.
