It’s no secret that Arsenal is in a dire need of a striker this summer. The gunners have shortlisted a few candidates and negotiations are set to begin. However, technical director Edu Gaspar could be well on course to pull a masterstroke in the summer market. Benfica striker Darwin Nunez is in hot form this season and has attracted attention from many of the Europe’s top clubs. Arsenal are also interested and Edu is on the verge of giving them edge over other clubs in the signing of the Benfica striker.

Darwin Nunez has lit-up the Primeira Liga with Benfica this season. Moreover, the Uruguayan has worked his wonders in the Champions League as well. Nunez scored a fine brace against Barcelona in the group stage to inflict a defeat on the Blaugranas. The striker further scored in the round of 16 against Ajax to fire Benfica in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal are closely tracking the 22-year-old Benfica talent and are even ready to scoop him in the summer. Aubameyang was let go for free in January which left Mikel Arteta with only two strikers in Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah. However, both Lacazette and Nketiah are currently misfiring for the gunners. Their contracts are up in the summer as well and an exit is looking more likely than an extension.

Edu’s genius move could help Arsenal land the Benfica striker

Arsenal fans could erupt in excitement as The Express has reported a massive news. Edu has already initiated contacts with Darwin Nunez’s agents according to The Express. The director has held positive talks with the striker’s agents for signing him at the end of the season. The striker who was labelled as “world-class” by former Benfica boss Jorge Jesus could prove to be massive signing if Arsenal bring him in.

The Portuguese side had made him their club-record signing in 2020, paying £20.5 million to UD Almeria. Nunez had amassed an impressive 16 goals in 30 games for the Spanish Segunda division side. The striker has continued his form at Benfica scoring an exceptional 26 goals in 33 appearances this season. As a result, many of the Europe’s top clubs have him on their radar.

But Arsenal could have pipped every other side as they have started the negotiations for Nunez’s signing from Benfica. Moreover, Nunez ticks all the boxes of what Mikel Arteta wants in his new striker. The Uruguayan is always looking to create a threat around the opponent’s penalty area with his daunting runs. He has powerful finishing ability as well, which currently lacks among the Arsenal strikers.

Nunez’s current market value stands at £36 million as quoted by transfermarkt. Though Benfica will demand an increased amount, Arsenal could well prepare themselves to shell out the money. The gunners decided against signing a striker in the winter market, and as a result could have enough funds for Nunez’s signing. Also Arsenal are in firm contention for qualifying for the Champions League, which could further help their cause.
