Barcelona are now thinking of bringing back Liverpool midfielder, Thiago Alcantra, after announcing the re-signing of Dani Alaves a few days back. According to a recent tweet by an acclaimed journalist Pedro Almeida, Xavi has already talked to Joan Laporta about the possible return of Thiago. The Reds signed Thiago last season to provide depth in the midfield. The injury crisis hit Liverpool hard last season which is why they signed Thiago. His form made everyone think that he will help Liverpool a lot but very few of that has been evident.
He has missed a lot of games for Liverpool because of unwelcoming injuries in the past season. While Xavi’s interest in Thiago is justified because of his earlier playing stint at Barcelona. The Catalans play possession-based games and Thiago is a master at dictating the game.
The injuries have kept Thiago at bay for Liverpool this season as he has got just one assist in 7 games. Although his overall contribution to the game is remarkable. Thiago has played for Barcelona before and he knows their game and there is very little doubt why he cannot succeed at Barcelona.
Why do Barcelona want the Liverpool Midfielder?
Barcelona are in the phase of a rebuild and are struggling a lot due to the financial crisis. The recent sacking of Ronald Koeman has displayed their struggles with results this season. While they are forced to look at free agents in the window because of some financial issues at the club. Many academy players are promoted at the moment but they lack the experience of the highest level.
The Liverpool midfielder can help Barcelona in this situation with his extraordinary experience. While the youngsters like Gavi and Pedri can learn a lot under Thiago. The deal makes full sense for both parties in their way. Barcelona wants to strengthen their squad and the Liverpool midfielder needs a fresh start. Xavi admires Thiago and can fit him in his system at Barcelona. Xavi plays possession-based football and Thiago was a part of the Barcelona squad when they won four La Liga titles, Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
The 30-year-old Spanish international has still a lot to provide. His quality on the ball and awareness of the game makes him one of the best midfielders of his time. He can even dribble past defenders if required. Barcelona needs a man who can control the midfield and hold the game and Thiago is known for doing that.
Although there is a risk in signing Thiago provided his constant occurrence of injuries. However, if Barcelona succeeds in keeping him fit, they will have a real gem in their hands. Thiago’s past experience with the Catalans can help him thrive under Xavi and a new Barcelona era. He would be a great addition to the squad to help the youngster and can be a replacement for Sergio Busquets. Barcelona should try and get the signature of the Liverpool midfielder to add depth to their squad and challenge for titles next year.
