Liverpool let a lot of their midfield targets slip away from their hands this summer. Liverpool had expressed a desire to sign many players such as Ibrahim Konate, Douglas Luiz, and Aurélien Tchouaméni. However, they were unsuccessful in their efforts to sign any of their targets. Another such name that Liverpool wanted to sign but couldn’t is Barcelona wonderkid Gavi. Liverpool made the deal to Gavi when he was negotiating a new contract with Barcelona.
La Porteria has claimed that Liverpool made an absurdly high offer to lure Gavi away from Camp Nou. Bayern Munich also made an offer for the player. However, the report has stated that the offer made by Liverpool was significantly higher than the one made by Bayern. Liverpool’s offer was four times higher than the one made by Barcelona. However, Fabrizio Romano has said that his future was always set with Barcelona and he had no plans to deviate away from the club.
Details of Gavi’s contract with Barcelona
Gavi has put pen to a deal worth £60k-a-week till 2026 with Barcelona. The 18-year-old has earned 10 caps for Spain and has established himself as a key figure of the Barcelona team as well. Along with Pedri, they form the backbone of the Barcelona midfield in the current squad. The duo will continue their domination of the midfield in the years to come. Gavi has an insane record despite being just 18 years of age. He ranks in the 97th percentile for touches and the 91st percentile for progressive carries. Gavi also is in the 93rd percentile for the dribbles completed. The Catalan club has given Gavi, along with Pedri, a release clause of €1bn. Gavi has the highest release clause in the football world currently. This effectively makes Gavi untouchable for any club that might want to lure him away from Barcelona
