According to reports, Chelsea are targetting French centre-half duo Jules Kounde and Wesley Fofana.
Chelsea’s centre-half trio Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, and Andreas Christensen are all out of contract next summer. Following which currently, Chelsea look set to lose their defensive trio for free next summer. However, Chelsea are working on extending their contracts.
There is confidence amongst the Chelsea ranks that they can extend Andreas Christensen and Thiago Silva’s contract. But Antonio Rudiger is demanding a £400k a week contract from Chelsea. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are keen on bringing in the German defender on a free transfer who are happy to hand him the demanded £400k a week contract.
While it is still highly unlikely that all three defenders will sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge. With this possibility, Thomas Tuchel has asked for defensive reinforcement. Leicester City star centre-half Wesley Fofana is high on the Chelsea wish list. The young French centre-half enjoyed a fantastic first season with Leicester City in the Premier League.
However, Fofana is currently on the sidelines after he picked up a serious injury in pre-season. While he is currently valued at around £36million (via Transfermarkt).
Meanwhile, Jules Kounde is also on the Chelsea list. The French centre-half was linked with a move to Chelsea over the summer but the move didn’t quite materialize. Kounde has a £68.7million release clause in his contract at Sevilla. A move for both the defenders can be a real possibility if the European champions lose one or two of Christensen, Rudiger, or Silva.
How Chelsea could line up with Jules Kounde and Wesley Fofana?
If Chelsea manages to sign both Jules Kounde and Wesley Fofana and extend Antonio Rudiger’s contract. They can line up with Rudiger in his normal left centre-half position. Fofana can be seen in the left centre-half slot like he has done for Leicester City in the past. While Kounde can slot in the centre. This pairing at the back would provide the European champions with immense pace and also great physical attributes.
While in the unlikely scenario of all three centre-half leaving, Trevoh Chalobah can be the answer at the back for Chelsea. Trevoh Chalobah has stepped up this season for Chelsea and the young defender could step up and fill the big boots of the likes of Silva and Rudiger. The youngster has looked very bright this season and has also scored twice in the Premier League this season. Thus, he could line up for Chelsea alongside the two new signings in the name of Kounde and Fofana.
