Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher was singing praises for skipper Virgil van Dijk recently. Carragher said that Virgil is one of the best defenders Premier League has ever seen. Though, it is not the first time Jamie lauding for the big Dutchman. Virgil suffered an ACL injury few seasons back that prevented him in his tracks. However, he now looks back to his best and back in the business. Owing to his defensive strength and captaincy, Liverpool are looking back in the title race again this season. Speaking to Freddie Ljunberg on ViaPlay, Carragher explains why he feels Van Dijk is one of the best.
“I think he’s the best we’ve seen in the Premier League. It’s not about a Liverpool bias or nothing like that, cos I’ve always said John Terry, for me, was the one I always loved.
But when you think of a Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, some of the best in the Premier League. They didn’t have to receive the ball off the goalkeeper in the six-yard box. They didn’t have to defend on the halfway line with teams pressing. I think now, playing centre-back is the most difficult position to play on a pitch. You’re supposed to have the technical ability of a midfield player, and the pace to go with.”
The points made by the former England international is worth considering. The ability of Van Dijk on the ball is better than many of the legends of the position. Though, Arsenal fans will not be happy with his comparisons. Nevertheless, Virgil is back as one of the top central defenders in the league this season. Even if he is not the no.1, he is in the debate of the bests. Liverpool will be glad to get their giant back to his best and definitely want him to lead for some silverware this season.
