In an interview with Liverpool ECHO, the Reds defender Joe Gomez explained his reason for signing an extension at Liverpool. There were speculations that Gomez might leave owing to his reduced game time. But he just did the contrary signing a new contract and he explained why.
Gomez joined Liverpool in 2015 from Charlton Athletic. Since his arrival, he grew eventually into a starter and has been a key member for them. He helped his side to lift the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League a year later. However, due to an injury, he suffered in 2020, he got sidelined for many matchdays and fell down the ranks.

Now, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip are ahead of him to partner with Virgil Van Dijk. In the recently concluded season, Gomez could make only 21 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Out of those 21, only 11 were starts.
Due to his fall in the pecking order and lack of game time many speculated to leave the club in January this year. But that wasn’t the case. Now the 25 year old will be staying beyond this season as well after penning a new contract. Explaining the reason for signing a new contract, he said:
“I can understand why people would have thought I’d be considering moving on, for sure, 100%. It’s apparent from my age now and based on my opportunities in the past, there was definitely still a decision for me to make.”
“I guess you could see it at as a crossroads. But speaking to the club, I knew it was an important decision for me to make. Fundamentally, the opportunity that I have here and the platform and the chance to be at this club is one that is hard to walk away from. Essentially, it was me accepting the fact I have got to take on the challenge.”
