Arthur Melo who arrived at Liverpool on loan from Juventus will undergo surgery for an injury

Things are going from bad to worse for Liverpool this season. The Reds lost to Arsenal 3-2 this weekend. This saw Liverpool sink to the 10th position in the league. Liverpool’s hope for the title seems to be slipping away too after they have failed to register a win in three matches so far. When it rains, it pours as is evident from the fact that they have lost loanee midfielder Arthur Melo to injury.

Arthur has struggled to make an impact in the Liverpool squad since he arrived from Juventus on deadline day. He sat out Liverpool’s match against Rangers in midweek after picking up an injury prior to the match. The medical staff at Liverpool have recommended an operation as the best option. This means that the midfielder is out of action for 6 months at least. This is nothing different compared to his current situation. Melo’s been sitting on the bench for most of the season and has raked up only 13 minutes of playing time with the Reds.

Arthur cost Liverpool £4 million in loan fees. Moreover, Liverpool have a clause worth £33 million in his clause to make his move to Anfield a permanent one, which seems unlikely to be triggered now. Arthur arrived with big dreams of forcing his way into the Liverpool squad. He was put through intense training to get up to speed with the standards demanded by Liverpool. However, the 13 minutes of playing time so far speak volumes in contrast to his initial desire. He made his debut against Napoli in Liverpool’s freak 4-1 defeat in the Champions League. Since then, he has remained as an unused substitute in the matches against Ajax and Brighton.
